"We have an assignment in Borneo," John said."Headshrinker country," I replied. "That's vastly over-rated," said Jim. "Headhunting was a practice away back at the beginning of the twentieth century," added John, "But I don't believe it happens any more." "That's nice to know," I replied. Once those two tight mouthsgot around to yammering there was no stopping them. The upshot was that I was invited to go along as a special assistant. That was the way that John put it. We left Muscat in the dark. My last view of Oman was of the Grand Hyatt Hotel where an hour of so previously I had been pleasantly sleeping. The Gulf of Oman was inky black for about half an hour and then daylight began to glimmer on the mountain tops in south east Iran. We flew almost due north and landed in Humedan. After refuelling and a bathroom break we were glad to be airborne again as the ground temperature was beginning to climb. Our next stop was Gwadar in the south-west corner of Pakistan, where we refueled and had a leisurely lunch. A couple of hours later we made a brief refuelling stop in Pasni. By late afternoon, we were approaching Karachi Jinnah International Airport. I anticipated that my first visit to a major Asian city would be a bit of a shock. It was! The main terminal is gorgeous. We wandered through the terminal and I soon realized what Jinnah means. It seems that Muhammad Ali Jinnah was the first governor-general of Pakistan. He is credited with being the father of the nation.
The Bell Long Ranger, was in the shop for a top overhaul, which has to be done every 100 flying hours. Consequently, we spent two days sightseeing in and about Karachi. The history of Karachi is interesting if you are interested in history. Let's say that you are interested in traffic jams; Karachi is just the place for you. Even the buses get into traffic jams. When there is a major traffic jam in the late afternoon, it is often well after midnight when the rush hour crowd manages to get home. On the next morning, we were ready to begin flying across India. It took us a week before we reached Myanmar. The next stop was Thailand. The highlight of our overnight stay in Bangkok was a visit to the Thailand Snake Farm . The next day we paid a visit to the Rose Garden. Thailand Guidebook
