"I suppose that is fascinating," Rubicon said making the mistake of looking into her eyes once again and hoping that he would survive for he felt himself becoming lost and confused.
"Sunsets are what I find truly fascinating," Leyla said. "They are so romantic, don't you think?"
"I've never really thought about sunsets being romantic," Rubicon admitted. Then he surprised himself by saying,"Besides the magnificent sunsets that ensued after Krakatoa were caused not by romance but by the ash that was floating around in the upper atmosphere for the better part of two years."
"Nevertheless they were remarkable even though it was just physics at work."
By the time Rubicon left that evening, he had a pretty good idea what made exponents tick. As he was walking along the path towards Leyla's back gate, he was caught up in a new grand plan. He had an insane idea that if he really got into Maths, he would for the first time in his life might just be able to beat Billy Bob and Joe Fortunas. Although he could wipe the floor with them when it came to English and Socials, they always left him far behind when it came to Maths.
Consequently, when Thursday evening rolled around, Rubicon was determined not only to beat Billy and Joe but had allowed his ego to dream that he might just bypass Leyla, who was a whiz at Maths.
"I'm so glad that you are finally taking an interest," Leyla said after they had gone through a slate of problems.
"Better late than never," Rubicon replied feeling like a traitor for he was doing his darndest to beat her.
For the first time in his life, Rubicon woke up on a Friday morning eagerly anticipating the weekly Maths quiz. Showing an avid interest was a new experience for him as was the fact that he had actually studied for the quiz.
As he shuffled off to school, Rubicon wondered what new opportunities awaited him. As he rounded the bend, the school was now in sight. Rubicon glanced around and then got out a study card and went over his notes.
